Speedriven Update: Standalone ECU on SL600
Last month, we made Mercedes tuning history when Speedriven installed and operated a standalone engine control system into the highly complicated engine bay of a Mercedes-Benz SL600 roadster. Since that time, we’ve been running more tests and working out shift points and throttle response. That is, until a few days ago: it’s time to put the car on a dyno!
The standalone solution Speedriven has spent the last several months developing for their Mercedes-Benz and AMG customers completely replaces the factory computer, taking over the many demands of the cars’ engine and transmission while giving the tuner full control over all of the car’s systems. That means that future builds won’t be hampered by the limitations built into the factory ECUs and TCUs, giving Speedriven a tremendous tuning advantage. To fully realize that advantage, it was necessary to establish a good baseline tune.
We were on the dyno for more than seven hours. In the end, though, the standalone ECU is working well. A bit better than the factory unit that was originally fitted to the SL600. The power curve, the shifting- everything is working precisely the way it needs to.
Now there’s an established starting point. That means it’s nearly time to put the new engine management system onto a car with some different hardware. Something that’s maybe a little bit more … impressive. You know?
