2003 SL55 Noise Fixes
After 6 months of battles I am happy to report success in solving both the roof rattles and noisy gas tank/fuel pump on my 2003 SL55.
Got the car (slightly used) in September 2003. Immediately noticed the ratlling roof and the "gurgling" from the pump in the gast tank.
After monaing, *****ing and bribing I finally got the roof rattles fixed in Jan 04. Eight different areas corrected. In shop for 10 days (Smythe European in San Jose). So happy with results I sent people who worked on car Champagne. Think that motivated them to work really hard on getting me a new gas tank. Looks like AMG ran off a new series of tanks and I got one (I was on a waiting list in North America).
It works! No more fel pump noise.

I still have roof rattles in my 2003 SL500 and my local dealer hasnt got a clue.
Can you describe the specific areas that needed fixing in the roof? Maybe I can help guide my local shop.
And yes, champagne would be a small price to pay to get these annoying rattles fixed.

Roof noise fixes that dealer performed
Here's what I have. Hope it is specific enough.....
Adjusted LF top latch
Partially R+R headliner & adj top latch guide
Adj front top latch & lube
Partially removed front roof liner at LF area, lubed contact areas & extensively adjusted lf latch & guide pin to miinimize noise. Still creaks lightly at times.
Lubed contact surfaces on back side of headliner.
R+R R&L trunk liners.
Adjust front trunk latches
Fixed front trunk carpet panel, was loose.
Reset carpet panel to correct position.
Replaced trunk latch and readjusted.
Missing bolt in roof assembly, replaced.
All this together fixed the problem. The number one tech at Smythe worked on this for 10 days. Over 100 miles of driving to find problems and test fixes
