The latest I heard is that the 55 engine will be replaced by the 63 engine (M156) in mid-2006.
This is a normally aspirated engine with the same horsepower, but less torque (600nm instead of 700nm).
This is a different power rating that I heard earlier, but what is interesting is that the SL appearently will not receive this engine. It is planned to go into the CL, S, E, CLS class.

Since most all of these cars will come without the speed governor anyway (outside the US ), the more interesting performance will be 0-300 km/H or more specifically acceleration over 200 as this is the really the starting speed for racing any other cars (at least in Germany)

I've managed just over 200mph flat out....it also ran to 300kph in 31 seconds! Compare that to a 550 Maranello at 60+ sec to 300 or a Murcielago at 35. These cars also make great track cars...give it a try...they are great fun. I think the 65 will probably be awsome!

Don't belive it one bit.
An AMG derestriction cannot be comapred to any other tuners derestriction, not even Brabus'
And as for going 200mph flat out, where did you do this? Ddn't your tyres burst, or do you have special custom made Michelins capable of going over 200mph frequently?
And as for 0-300km/hr time, don't think a 550hp 2 ton SL55 will do it 3 seconds slower than the Carrera GT and SLR

You are from the UK....you should know the facts! The brit magazine Autocar did a comparison test back in '92 when the SL55 was released. It was compared with the Murcielago, AM Vantage, 550 Maranello, and the Porsche GT2. They had the SL beating everything to 300kph (32 sec) (Lambo 34, Porsche 40, 550 63, AM 60). They also measured the top speed at Nardo at 202, which was only beaten by the Lambo at 205.
Another brit mag EVO lists the top speed of the SL55 at 202.
The point of my post was that I was so pleased with the ECU work that was done and that I was also able to confirm the magazine's figures that I wanted to share.
I live in Arizona and we have some pretty lonely roads that are dead flat and straight for as far as the eye can see...so it's really quite easy to drive flat out here. Also, the car is so quick that on relatively short straights it can hit 160-170 with no problem.
As for the tire question......no melt down, no explosion. Perhaps if one were to be driving at top speed for extended periods of time one would need some different tires....but in the real world Z rated P Zero Rossos are more than enough for the job.
Have fun and be safe!

I too have been pondering the performance advantage of the S/SL/CL 65 over the supercharged brothers.
While there is no doubt that a chipped TTV12 is king of the roost from a power perspective, the 65's seem to be grossly inadequate for the price premium.
My slightly modded E55 makes mincemeat of the quoted figures for the CL/SL65, with a chipped S600 being faster again.
I don't have measured 0-300kmh numbers, but can confirm sub 13 sec 0-200kmh figures.
From a practical perspective these cars are overpriced underachievers IMO.

Not to mention the handling penalty the 65's will have with close to 200 extra lbs up front.
A similar analogy can be drawn betwenn the Shelby Mustang GT350 and the GT500...Yeh the GT500 has more grunt but the GT350 is better handling and acknowledged as the better driver and all round performer.
You certainly cannot match the torque of the TTV12 but tuners are getting up to 620HP out of the V8...with cams, headers, airbox and chip mods...and for less money than the SL65
without the weight penalty.

I dont think a chipped s600 can go faster than and SL65, as the SL is not heavier than the S class, and the engine is a totally modified one of that in the S600. I think it does suck though, well not for you, that E55's go as fast and can easily go faster than the SL's or CL's. I dont know where I heard this, but I think I heard that they may releasing an E600 in the future!. Imagine that with the Brabus mods! I don't think it would be able to handle the power that well though.
