Any of you track your SL?

I'm very interested in your experiences especially with the brakes. How did they hold up? Any warping of the rotors? Did you switch pads? Any input regarding any aspect would be appreciated. I like tracking cars and am considering doing it with my new SL55. Thanks,

Pablo

Pablo:

I have done a number of track events with the SL and it was brilliant!

I didn't change a thing...stock pads, fluids, etc.

Towards the end of the day the brake overheating warning light would come on. Simply taking a couple of slower 'cool down' type laps brought the temp down. Even when the warning lights came on I never experienced ANY brake fade.

I did the advanced AMG Challenge Driving School where you get to drive all the AMG cars on the track and they were all brilliant.

Keep in mind that you aren't driving a car designed for the track. It's not going to be like tossing a Catterham or a Radical around the track...but it is massive fun!...and the car is no worse for it. The AMG cars are built to take it!

Dino, Thank you. I can't wait to get it out to Watkins Glen in July maybe and then again in Sept. It's good to know that the SL55 can take it even though it is very heavy and fast. I may not be as good a driver as you so I may use the brakes a bit more. I'll let you know how it goes.

The best way that I have found to drive the SL is...always in the manual mode....shift on the steering wheel and left foot brake. It takes a little getting used to but it is definitely faster that way.

Have fun!

Dino, I'm a bad left foot braker but maybe I'll try it. Does the car upshift at 6500 or a little higher on its own in manual mode?
Thanks.

It takes a while to develop the feel for left foot braking. I learned it karting and then carried it over to the Indycar.

It will upshift at around 6700
