few new mods i made to my SL55

picked up an 2007 SL55 last year oct. with 38K miles and did a few maintenance and mods myself.
Replace transmission conductor plate, plug, filter and fluid. Transmission is a NAG1 which is chrysler transmission which you can purchase the part for dirt cheap & i also added an aluminum pan that holds an extra 4 quarts of transmission fluid. Fabbed up my own cold air intake with (2) 90 degree carbon fiber tubes, (2) spectre 4 inch inline filters (soon cerakote) with stock intake down pipes will change out to (2) 45 degree carbon fiber tubes in the near future. anodized red surge tanks and valve covers while replacing valve cover gaskets. Use oem valve cover gaskets, DO NOT use bapmic valve cover gasket. Replaced all pulley to aluminum pulley with nachi bearings including the one with the security Torx screw idler total of 7 pulley. Modified the front engine cover & currently splitting the cooling system. Rerouted the horns behind the crash bar so nothing is obstructing the intake airways, relocated the oil cooler back a little without cutting anything to fit the heat exchanger holding it up by rivets. Currently working on putting a small reservoir in the center behind the crash bar T into the intercooler bosch pump & installing (2) 5 1/2 ball bearing electric fans 1 on each side of the reservoir for extra cooling when needed. Future waiting to add on a 72mm sc pulley, custom cerakote x pipe with cerakote ec mid-length headers, 200 cell cats no resonator, no secondary cat all v-band flanged to stock mufflers. Also just installed some lowering links for a better looking stance. Currently pulling like a freight train just CAI & EC ecu tune.stay tuned............

Looks good so far. I like that you did all the maintenance and cooling upgrades before going bonkers on the pulley etc. Are you going to put on the headers before the smaller pulley? Just curious because I have only an 84 mm pulley, ECU and TCU tune from Eurocharged. Wondering if headers would be a good step for me if I don't plan on doing any other mods. I'm pretty happy with the cars performance and drive-ability. Looking forward to your next post!

Cheers!

Dyno your car with and without those filters. You may be surprised at the power difference.

yes they are custom 19 alphards. i first seen them on a poster fitted to an SLR. Looks cool but it didnt have no other option of reverse lip or step lip.It would look way cooler with those options. If i decide to go widebody i could get wider front and rear but for now the setup is conservative we'll see how it looks when i get some time and sunshine around here.

From all the research I've done and seen....Headers is almost a must on these cars to get peak performance. Many people report a solid 30+HP gain. Do some research though as some of the headers can be prone to cracking. I know Renntech's are solid and MBH long tube are near bullet proof. Might get lucky and find some one dumping theirs. I would also assume Kleeman's are solid.

headers def a must for these engines similar to Cobras & gt500 mustang. any mild steel headers would work actually, but if your looking for longevity you must jetcoat or cerakote outside and inside to keep the temperature inside the pipes where it belongs. currently the car doesnt come alive till around 110mph. Cant wait to see what it does with the headers, xo pipes with bassani quad mufflers outback. Last but not least, will be adding a wavetrac (^__^)

'12 Cayenne Turbo, '12 GL450, '03 SL55, '89 560SL,
Wow, those wheels are gorgeous!

Question about cooling... I have the 77mm Eurocharged clutch pulley, and I was under the impression that the cooling in the SL was pretty adequate (when compared to the E55, which I've always heard does need some cooling help with higher boost pressure). Is there a enough of a difference difference in the boost from the 72mm to 77mm which warrants the cooling work? Or am I simply mistaken about the cooling in the SL55 and I'm about to kaboom my engine with my 77mm pulley?
