About to kick off a PPI on what appears to be a really nice 2009 SL63 with the P30 package. But service history is a little sparse and the seller shows little curiosity about the famous head bolt problem. Does the car save an error code when it registers a low coolant level? Are there any other tale-tale signs of an impending problem I should have the mechanic take a hard look at?

Absolutely never buy the car unless you have a MB mechanic give it a complete inspection. I would only have a MB dealer inspect it and pull the service master sheet and see the complete MB history. Inspect the head bolt and lifter issues.
