05 SL65 Cooling Upgrades

I've got a 2005 SL65 and am looking to do some basic cooling upgrades. I've looked at the Killer Chiller, a Split cooling kit, and others (trunk tank), but not sure which is a good 1st step.

I don't plan on tracking or taking the car to the strip, but the summers here in OK are excruciatingly hot. Not sure if I can justify $700-800 for a cooling kit if it's more of a track-use only mod.

Anyone have any suggestions or current setups?

Thanks!

Mike

A CWA100 pump properly bled and setup to run full blast with the key on has done wonders for my 09 for under $300. The updated coolant expansion tank and hardpipe from the M279 is also a nice add.

How did you wire it to run key on?

Direct ground on the intercooler coolant pump relay. For my 09 the relay is the uppermost one facing the passenger side in the bin behind the passenger seat (purple/red wire going in the top terminal on the relay is the giveaway). Pull the relay, bend the ground pin outward towards the front of the car and attach a ground wire. There's a nice bolt sitting right underneath that you can ground to. I put a zip tie on just to be sure the relay was secure. If in doubt, run a jumper wire across relay terminals to check for pump operation before changing anything.

I have the upgraded Bosch pump (not installed yet). Is the CWA100 that much better?

I installed one of these on my W221 S65...an EMP WP29 reprogrammed to plug and play. Highest flow rate of ANY pump on the market by a mile. It will require a small amount of fabrication (i.e. making a bracket to hold it), but with the addition of Eurocharged's larger heat exchanger it brought my ITs down significantly.

^ YES! Glad to see someone running that pump on a Benz. I may have to fab up a 1" return line from the ICs and run that thing.

To Mike: I consider the CWA100 to be the minimum pump for these cars. It moves 2-2.5x the coolant as the 010 pump and is standard on the latest high powered MBs. SL65s have a nice sized IC radiator so upping the pump to cope with the backpressure these systems generate is good bang for the buck.

There are a few different options for pumps, but I really think an expansion tank and a supplemental heat exchange are the most important. Even with a stock 010 Bosch pump flow doesn't matter if you're just circulating hot water. Also with the stock setup, it's easy to bleed out from the overflow without any way for expansion.

I added a trunk tank, which allows for expansion and additional coolant capacity. I also have a supplemental heat exchange. My setup has 2 pumps, but is still limited by the heat exchanges ability to remove heat.

A properly fitted killer chiller may provide better day to day cooling. A.C. fittings instead of hose clamps are a must to prevent leaking. I think they can give you one or 2 decent pulls but with normal driving you can be back at full power in 20 minutes or so. However don't expect to keep your cabin cool in hot temps.

Do you guys have part numbers to these pumps, like the Bosch ones etc. Or the ones that don't require too much fab to put in. Thanks
