Coolant Capacity-14.5qts vs. 10qts Actual

Hi folks. Changed out the coolant today using the Schwaben pressurizing system. Although I followed all instructions, including keeping the heater core open with the heat on max, low fan, I drained less than 2 1/2 gallons (10 qts). The reservoir definitely started full and was refilled with same. The manual states capacity is appx. 14.5 qts. How could I have been off by over a gallon? Could the crankcase and/or heat exchanger still have been full even though the entire system was pressurized?

Poppy, I am going to flush my system as soon as it cools off here in the desert. I am going to use the same approach I always have in all my cars to remove as much of the original fluid as possible. i.e. remove the thermostat so the system does not have to reach 80+ C to allow full flow. Drain, circulate, repeat, until water is nearly clear. I will use distilled water for the final flush, then drain as much as possible and measure that volume so I know how much capacity is remaining. Replace thermostat. Add undiluted coolant, then top off with distilled.

Thanks for the response. I just assumed that some older coolant somehow remained in the system. Since a majority of it is new, that’s good enough for me. I’ll do it again in maybe another year. I put on < 1k miles per year and have plenty of coolant left over.
