I am hoping someone can give me advise on purchasing an after market stereo for my 2003 SL55 AMG. I purchased one off the internet last year and it was a disaster. I am looking for one that is touch screen, is a plug and play and works with the existing Bose system.

You really have two potential routes. One is an Android based Comand knockoff out of China that will give you a modern interface and CarPlay/Android Auto, some are plug and play depending on your model. But quality can be spotty. The other option is a typical aftermarket double DIN head unit and a dash kit. This is probably the better option from the head unit standpoint but you also have to replace and rewire your speakers and the dash kit doesn’t look OEM. Or you can just make the Comand unit you have now better by adding an aux in or Bluetooth, which is the route I took.

I just added bluetooth as well to my stock dash, the only problem is the screen has developed spots so I have to replace that at least to make it look alright.

Have you tried a compound and polish of the Comand screen as outlined in the R230 FAQ? Mine had a series of blotches and what looked like scratches on the screen due to the exterior UV coating failing, I used Meguiar's clear plastic cleaner and followed it with the clear plastic polish, it looks like new.
