Noise from rear suspension
Have heard kind of a "squeak" or "chirp" coming from the rear when going over a bump or rough road that induces vertical motion. Speeds modest, 20 - 40 mph. At first thought it might be stuff in the trunk. Took everything out of the trunk, put the top down, and went driving around listening. Was able to create the noise many times. I have learned in the past with the dealer that the more diagnosis I do up front the better. Any ideas what this might be? Anyone else experince this?

Does the squeak or chirp happen when you make a hard stop. Stomp on the brake and see if the noise happens. I had a problem with my gas tank on my SL 55. Something got loose and was giving a clonking sound when I accelerate fast or stop hard. Try it and if you hear the noise. tell the dealer to exchange the entire gas tank.

I had exactly the same effect ! edit "on my SL500 / 2002"
There are some "rubber" - parts mounted on the rear axle. quite huge parts ( about 60mm diameter and as well 60 mm high ) sorry do not know the right part description.
A MB Service bulletin exist - and your dealer should know about this ! - they replace this parts "ONE on each side", and it is silent again. (mine made a noise in the city centre, when driving 20 km/h; breaking, accelerating - awful
)
Have a picture of this part as well - so if you want I can send this to you.

Finally got the squeak in my rear suspension fixed on my 03. A bit more involved than I expected. From the dealer repair log....
"Discovered bracket for rear wheel speed sensor rubbing exhaust when suspension was loaded. Determined bracket was installed upside down. Reinstalled bracket. Noise gone."
