PSE pump not working

My PSE pump doesn’t seem to work any longer. I feared I may have fried something when I replaced the 20A fuse with a 30A. Si I took the pump apart to test. Applying voltage directly to the red and black wires directly at the pump causes the motor to run and air is sucked in through the intake valve. Applying voltage at the molex connector does nothing. I tested continuity, and although the connectors look a bit charred, they seem to still make a good connection. The circuit board itself appears to be in good shape. No charred components or the board itself. Anyone have any ideas why the pump isn’t working?

see pictures.

Circuit board looks good

Charred connectors. Still good continuity between connector and circuit board.

Power connected directly to motor makes the motor work

My guess is that (due to corrosion) you had a mediocre connection on one (or more) pin(s) and the increasing resistance of that connection created heat which caused the problem to get worse (pin loses temper, connection gets worse, heats more, etc). In one of your pics, there is a burnt pin (on the PCB side of the connector). I would look at the harness-side of that connection first.

Chris

I probably should’ve taken a picture of the harness side, but it looked similar to what you see on the pcb side. The plastic is melted a bit, but the connectors are still making a connection and show voltage…. Although I expected to see 12v but only see around 5v or so. Either way, I can’t get the motor to run when applying power to the pcb connector… unless I need to apply power at multiple places and not just the connector with the red/white wire? What do the other wires do? Obviously, the thick brown is ground. And what about the smaller connector with the 6 or 8 pins? What does that one do?

Anyone know the color codes for the PSE pump? As stated above… the pump seems to be fine. I’m trying to figure out if it’s just a harness problem or the pcb board. I’d hate to get a new pump and not be the issue. Where do I need to supply power at the harness to get it to work? I would have thought simply a power and ground… but no clue what the green, orange and yellow wires are.

thanks,

matt

Other than light bulbs and the cigarette lighter, you will find very little on this car that will work merely by supplying power.

As with most everything on the R230, there is a CAN BUS connection that likely controls when this operates (pins 9 and 10 on Conn 1). I have attached a copy of the PSE "diagnostics" page from the ETM. It will not provide enough info to solve your problem, but should give you a better idea as to what you are dealing with. If you have not read the codes yet, that would be the next step.

HTH,
Chris

Thank you for the diagram. I’ll see what I can figure out.
