Transmission Plug Replacement

So I went to change the transmission plug on my 05 SL65, watched the requisite YT videos, and when I went to pull the plug out of the trans, I got doused in trans fluid... I don't understand how the plug is supposed to sit, but none of the videos I had watched made any statements about draining the trans beforehand. I just would up changing the o-ring on the male-side of the plug.

Is that correct? Should I drain it 1st, or is there something else going on?

Now off to order garage floor cleaner...

Maybe I should have had it off the floor on the one side as opposed to be on a scissor lift?
