Sulfer Smell / VRP Stage 4
New to me 2005 SL55, owned the car for almost one year now and I am in love. However, after a full acceleration I get a strong sulfur smell. Is this the cats cooking off or something in the transmission? I will be changing the trans oil shortly as a preventative measure. Curious to see if anyone else has had the same experience as me. One odd event that occurred recently was that after a full pull up to 130mph the transmission temporarily locked up enough to bark the tires and then went into neutral. After pulling over and restarting the engine everything was and has been fine since.
Additionally, I have purchased a stage 4 VRP package. Anyone else have experience with this kit ? Should I harden the transmission before install ? I love the factory exhaust note and want to keep it (albeit it will much louder), will keeping the mufflers and deleting the resonator keep roughly the same exhaust note. I have seen others doing a full exhaust replacement but the note is too raspy/choppy for my taste (fisherfast and Mr.Affalterbach). Looking for feedback from anyone on here with experience with VRP or other exhaust modifications. Thanks in advance.

I get that when I haven't been driving it hard. Every once in a while, I will punch it and get the sulfur smell. I was told it was the sulfur and carbon being burned off in the cats.

Personally there’s absolutely no way I’d install any performance enhancing kit on that car until the cause of that transmission malfunction was found and remedied!

There are quite a few stock cars of certain brands, such as Toyota that always smell of sulphur when you drive behind them. When I had my 01.5 S4, I would get this sulphur smell. I was always told to not worry as it was just the cats working. I dont recall ever really seeing the 55 engine, which ive also owned, making the sulphur smell. Perhaps there has been some mod to the exhaust that you dont know about? One thing is for sure that was mentioned above, is to fix your transmission first. VRP is junk (the absolute worst MB vendor to exist) and when you mess your car up further, you will have no help and they will place blame on you. Only go into running a tune or uprated charger knowing that you can afford to fix and or rebuild every other system on your own dime.
