Break-in period according to the manual:

1) For first 1000 miles, drive at varying but moderate vehicle and engine speeds

2) Avoid heavy loads (full throttle driving) and excessive engine speeds (no more than 2/3 max rpm in each gear

3) Avoid acceleration by kickdown

4) Do not attempt to slow the vehicle down by shifting to a lower gear using the gear selector lever

5) Select positions 3, 2 or 1 only when driving at moderate speeds (for hill driving)

6) Select C (comfort mode) as the preferred shift program for the first 1000 miles

7) After 1000 miles you may gradually increase vehicle and engine speeds to permissible maximum

There is additional advice for AMG vehicles that includes not exceeding 85 mph and engine speeds above 4500 rpm.

I hope that 2003 is broken in by now or that was a real waste of money!

I think I have posted this link before, however it is an interesting and controversial relating to wearing an engine in.

AMG break-in

If you go to an AMG Challenge event, you will find 35 to 40 essentially brand new AMG cars on hand. I've attended twice and drove cars "all out" that only had a handful of miles on the odometer. The engines were as strong and fast as one would expect and 6-dozen drivers got in and out of the various models driving them as agressively as possible over the course of a day. I concluded that these cars are designed to perform perfectly under this extraordinary evironment and that break-in is not necessary. Some of the brake pads all but caught fire, however, there were no engine problems, let alone failures!
