SL55: Some questions

Hi guys, first off I'd like to say hello. I'm Dan from the bmwm5.com board. I heard about your board from Mr. Vanos, Drew, JamE55 and Gustav who poke around over there, but recently as I ordered an SL55, I thought I'd join in.

I have some questions about the SL55, in regards to tuning. I know about the power hike, but if I remember the AMG engines are still built by hand. If that's the case, then one should be able to "customize" an order as you could with AMG before they were bought out.

Basically what I'm getting at is I want to have all of the limiters removed (including the black-box), and I'd also like a power hike beyond the 493bhp. I'd imagine that with some ECU remapping and maybe a bit of work, you could easily extract another 50-60 bhp w/o reliability concerns.

What do you guys think?

Mine's still on the boat coming back from the Gumball 3000, and i want it de-limited as soon as it gets here. I've been told that no one makes tyres for a 4400lb car at 208mph! Does anyone know different?

Mercedes has stated that they have special tires that they will fit to a customers car for high speed test runs.

There seems to be still be a little confusion regarding the actual HP that the 55 comes with...Fouad in Sweden has said that AMG told him that the car already has over 500 HP...this was also told to me by a senior MBNA tech who had test driven the car...
The publicly stated HP figures are conservative and probably reflect the conservative PR of DC... Lonman's experience on the Gumball seems to bear this out...with superior performance against much lighter cars...this has also appeared in some German comparison tests of the car.
There have also been comments emerging from AMG that removing the limiter has an effect on total HP...My understanding is that AMG will only raise the limiter to 186 on a street car...but will go higher for high speed test runs with provided tires...under their supervision.
That said I am sure that there is probably some remapping that could be done for higher performance top end...as the car is surely optimised for lower RPM efficiency.

p.s. Great videos Lonman!...we are all very envious!!!

All SL55's will have a maximum of 506bhp (from factory) Mine was one of the early 476bhp(only!!) cars, although it had 484bhp when i tested it. If you have brought an early car, it will go back to the factory for the mods.

Lonman, where did you find that stuff out about "going back to the factory" ?

I have a note from someone in AMG (responding to my quetsions about this) saying that that the 496bhp "change" is just a documentation change, and the engine is the same ...

BTW, where was your car dyno'd ?

Cheers
