I understand that the 07-08 had an option for a "Performance Package." But did the 05-06 have the same option? The reason I'm asking is that I'm going back and forth between the 05-06 and the 07-08, and I'm not sure which would be the better purchase. Also, I have been told by many owners that the 05-06 engine was much more "bulletproof."

Those sound like very useful upgrades. Also, as I understand it, the 2007+ has a newer and more reliable version of the ABC system.
In early 2003, Motor Trend brought a 2003 SL55 AMG to California's wine country to visit Mario Andretti at his vineyard, asking him to drive the car. Mario did driving tests on a track and reached 208 MPH, and said the car was "awesome, awesome." I wonder about the electronic limiter, weren't the cars limited to around 156 MPH? It would seem they brought him an "factory typical" example, not a specially prepared car. Otherwise, what's the point? I believe that once a guy gets a tune either from Renntech or Kleemann or VRP, etc., the electronic limiter is removed, if there was one
-MY2003-2005 did not have the option.
-MY2006 did have the Perf. Package as an option. Pretty rare car with that package and ABC 1.
-MY2007-2008 was the first facelift of the R230, and had the Perf. Package as an option, ABC 2, slightly different styling and a mildly-revised M113K.
The M113K didn't have any factory defects, so I wouldn't worry about one year vs. another. A well-maintained and exercised example (preferably stock) is more important than the year for that engine.

very interesting about this performance package. Does anybody know how common it was on the 2007/8SL 55. I’ve had my car over 170 mph, so I was always wondering if somebody had installed a tune that bypassed the limiter. Also have the 19 inch wheels so i now assume my car has the p30 option? Thanks for the posts
