Hi everyone:

asking for feedback on estimate fair labor, project estimated cost to expect, by skilled independent merc tech: replace all front lighting assemblies (both main headlights and both fog lights) on my 2009 SL63 AMG.

I already purchased new fitted replacements: just need to know what a reasonable~ i$h estimate is for this by a skilled tech, whos deeply experienced & comfortable working w/electrical and all their "ghosts in the machine. "

I understand front bumper assembly likely needs total removal, for optimal access to the headlight units.

Has anyone done this somewhat recently? at an indie shop? Any specific "gotchas" or pro tips I should spend the time to understand? [i know about the brittle wiring inside the head units , often brittle, fried by original oem xenon lamps: well documented design flaw, that often melted wire vinyl coating / housing.

Thanks in advance!

main headlampa. in reviews many say, essentially,
main headlamps. in reviews many say, essentially, "best upgrade ever!". Pretty strong endorsement. But what caught my attention in due diligence was, how many people [hundreds upon hundreds] in reviews were emphatic about "best ever" type statements .

Speaking from experience on the '09 SL63, the front bumper cover needs to be removed to replace the headlights.

It's pretty straight-forward. Took me maybe 30 minutes and that was at a careful pace.

Reinstalling the bumper cover took a bit longer as I was carefully getting the corners aligned and secured.

What helped was using a circular-top padded mechanics stool on wheels to stabilize the bumper.

As for shop labor, they will go by whatever is book time for the job. I wouldn't scrutinize an estimate of a few hours to do this.

If a shop claims something silly like 10+ hours, however, I would pass.

When you say "front lighting assemblies", do you mean the entire plastic headlight assembly? And you already have these parts?
Once I'm clear on what you need, on Monday I will look it up in ALLDATA to determine what the book time is on the job. That should give you the expected labor charge when multiplied by the shop's hourly rate.
