SLK/R170: startup noise

Noise on startup
I suspect that the sound you are hearing is the starter gear not disengaging from the flyywheel ring gear. Our SLK230 does that once ever 3-4 starts. It is no doubt causing dameage to the starter pinion and flywheel ring gear. I will take it in for service soon.

I had a similar problem a few months ago with difficulty starting. The problems coincided with me having filled up with Exxon/Mobil gas several times on a road trip. I mentioned it to my cousin, a GM mechanic, and he said mobil puts some additives in their gas that could cause faulty starts.
Bottom line: I went back to only using BP/Amoco and haven't had any problems since! Sunoco worked OK too, but I avoid Exxon/Mobil

Mercedes had a service note about startup noise. It is normal for the engine to clatter for a few seconds after startup if the engine is cold or has been sitting for a while. The oil is not at the top of the engine right away so there is a clatter for a brief period of time.

I used to work for a VW dealership and most of the VW models had hydralic valve lifters, these would rattle when first started until oil pressure was built up in the lifters. This happened slightly when the cars were new and would get worse as the engines got to a high mileage. According to VW this was normal and "of no consequence"
Sometimes changeing the oil and filter would help, the genuine oil filter had a check valve in it to prevent the oil syphioning out over night and to give a quicker build up of oil pressure.
I do not know if SLK's have hydralic valve lifters but most modern cars do, is your car a high mileage? try changeing the oil and filter (use a qenuine Merc filter)
