Brake lights

Hi, I am new member to this forum and I am looking forward to this "online club". I just purchased a 1998 SLK (Bahama blue) 2 weeks ago and I love it. It had less than 25K miles on it.

Anyway, days after I brought it home. The brake lights started to go bad on me. I replace the sockets and it worked for one side only. Does anyone have the similar problem? I wanted to remove the whole lens assy to see if there is any corrosion build up on it. Does it sound like a good approach? If yes, can anyone know how to remove it?

Thx,
D

You need to replace the whole light. The printed circuit board burns up, thats a common problem on the SLK'S. I just replaced one of them on my SLK.

Had the same problemand decided to try a fix. I removed the lens assembly and usung a small hand grinder (ie Dremel) cleaned the contact area and then applied a bead of solder to the pitted areas. Used the grinder to smooth the area and rerassembled. This fix has held for well over a year . Also applied dielectric grease to the contact area.

Thanks. That was my plan B. I rotated the socket a bit in order to allow a different touch point (avoid any corrisions on the same spot) and it worked. So I am very certain that there is a "dead spot" there. I will try to remove the whole assy and do the scrubbing and tinning this weekend to fix it once and for all.

I had a similar problem with my 99. I had someone step on the brake pedal while I twisted and turned the bulb in it's socket until it worked. I haven't had any problem with it since.
