New (CPO) 2003 SLK230 -- Emblem, Audio, Windscreen

Well I bought a CPO 2003 SLK230 with 40K on it from my Mercedes Dealer -- hope it warms up enough to take to top down soon!

Learned a lot about it from these forums. A few questions:

1) The emblem on the steering wheel is not quite right. I see where you can get hood emblems on ebay cheap. They look the same. Will they fit? How does the steering wheel emblem come off?

2) I've read a few things about the audio setup. Someone saida Blaunkpaut stereo would fit the harness with no changes. Is this the case? I've read the VW harness will fit the older ones, how about this one? I'd really like to put a different stereo in. I guess retaining the CD changer with a different stereo is out of the question? I have a homemade cup holder mount for the XM that works pretty good.

3) I didn't get the windscreen with it. Checking with the dealer to see what's up with that. How much problem would it be if I don't have one? What's it really do?

Well that's probably enough questions for my first post. Thanks and wish me luck with the new car.

1 The emblem on the steering wheel is not available separately it comes with the air bag.
If the hood one matches you should be able to swap them out. Pry it off.

2 Many postings about the stereo. Some have replaced the head unit with slightly better sound. Great sound requires replacing the entire system.

3 Dealer should supply you with it. It does not do much, blocks a little light from headlights and slightly reduces wind.
One down side is the hem at the top splits the rear view vision in the mirror blocking some of the view.

You can get stuff on ebay, type in "SLK" or "R170". There is a lot of stuff there.

Well the emblem wasn't quite the right size, so no joy there.

I've about given up on the radio -- cassette adapater works. May route the wire inside as I've seen someone do on the Web.

The dealer says they don't have the windscreen. I've heard it is bad anyway. Having a custom one made by a guy who makes crossfire windscreens on e-bay. Will report on how it comes out.

The only other problem I seem to have now is that the engine seems rough when cold. Can't decide if the transmission is not transferring power smoothly or if it just not running smooth. After 10 minutes it is fine. Oh well, nice thing about CPO -- warranty!

What is CPO? I did a search, but nobody ever says what it means. Thanks!

You should let the car warm up for at least 5 minutes or until it hits 80 c.

It will be rough until then as it holds the transmission in first gear to help it warm up faster.

If you push it it will try to down shift into first as you try to go faster causing it to shift back and forth between first and second.

Like riding a bucking bronco.

Not to good for the tranny.

Here's a link for a guy who just put a JVC head unit in his SLK:

Between this and the links he provides, you'll find everything you need to do a stereo swap.

Personally, I've decided to keep the factory (ugh) stereo. Who the heck listens to a stereo in a convertible anyway?

I swapped my SLK air bag for the same one from the SL. They both have an A170 part number. I didn't like the look of the emblem on the SLK steering wheel airbag.
