6 spd manual tranny question (1st gear)

Hi

I just recently purchased a black on black 2001 320 with the 6spd.

I love it but find 1st gear is almost unnecessary ... very high ratio. Whats the word? "Short"? At 4.46 its a very high ratio, more like a truck's low than a sports car 1st gear. I find I can easily pull away from most stops (except uphill) in 2nd gear...

Is 1st gear designed to be hills only or what? Thanks in advance.

Recent MTs that I have owned are a 1990 Corvette, a 2004 WRX and a 2000 Boxster. This is definitely the highest ratio 1st gear I have driven other than my old truck...

As an aside, I used to own a 98 230 (AT) and decided I wanted a 320 with MT. After months of looking I couldn't find what I wanted around here so "settled" for the Boxster. Nice car, fun drive, but no where near as nice as an MB. Then a black 320 with 6spd came on the market and now I have returned to MB & SLK. So anyone out there tryng to decide between 230 vs 320 vs Boxster ... go 320 with the MT.

Thanks,
Mike

I think they did it like that so you can take off real easy.
