noise from differential

I am new to the MBWorld, and I am looking for some help. I have a 2001 slk 320 (auto) and I am hearing a rattle, tapping noise coming from the area of the differntial.

I only hear the noise when I am driving between 45 and 35 mph, and I take my foot off the accelerator (coasting). Once I accelerate the noise stops, or my speed raises/falls above/below 45-35 mph the noise stops.

I place the vehicle running on a lift and observed a vibration coming from the area were the drive shaft enters the differential at the above speeds.

Anyone experience a similar problem?

Doesn't sound like a differential problem which is good, those repairs are not cheap. It sounds more like the U-joints are going out on the driveshaft, something you want to have taken care of real soon because if the driveshaft drops out it can cause serious damage.
