Dealer charges $800 to replace oil pan

Saturday night my car started leaking oil really heavily (On a related note, I hate Houston construction, which is responsible for the massive ledge in the middle of the road that cracked my oilpan.) so I topped off the oil and took it into the dealer this morning. They want to charge me $400 parts and $400 for 4 hrs of labor to replace the oil pan. At first glance, this seems pretty unreasonable to me--what do you guys think?

Thanks as always for your advice to this novice,

Bryan

Mercedes spares have always been expensive, especially those which are not replaced during normal service intervals. So $400 for the part doesn't surprise me, nor does $100/hour for a nice shiny dealership labor cost. It's still alot of money though.

Why don't you just replace it yourself? It really easy.

It turned out they wanted to do $6k of work . . .

replace the oil pan, refinish the front bumper, replace two wheels, replace two tires, replace engine oil sensor, repair power steering, repair gearbox

Whether or not this was all necessary, I don't know, but insurance covers all of it, so I figured why not. I confirmed that all new parts were new from MB, so everything seems to be kosher. Anything else I should look out for?

Thanks,

Bryan

the "rip-off" factor is hidden in there somewhere

as long as the insurance company is footing the bill...
