SLK/R170: Side Markers

Side Markers
I am trying to exchange the amber side markers with the clear euro style on my wife's 2004 slk230. My owner's manual says that the marker should slide forward and then lift out from the rear. I am unable to make this happen. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any advice.
