SLK/R170: roof sticks when trying to put top down
Lately, however, the roof sticks when I put the top down. The windows lower, the rear hatch (?) opens, but when it's time for the top to lift up, it sticks. I have to push up to get it to un-stick. Then the rest of the process works fine. And no problems putting the top up.
It is requiring more and more pressure to un-stick.
Any ideas?
Warm weather is coming. Gotta put the top down!
Thanks!
There is a hydrualic cylinder inside the top that may have a leak and the fluid level is getting low.The hydrualic pump in the trunk on the passenger side behind an access panel by the cd changer. There is a round plastic plug inside on the headliner at the center towards the front edge, its for access to a manual release of the top catches. Pull it off and stick your finger on the inside of your headliner toward the front, if you find any oil its bad news.
It cost me 208 for the release cylinder, 130 for a headliner and 20 for some MB hydrualic fluid. 1 for some small black zip ties.Total damage... 360 & my labor (a long time). Hope this is not your problem. What year is yours? Is it under warranty? Paul
