fuel gauge inaccurate

My 2000 SLK230 runs out of fuel when guage reads a bit below the 1/2 mark. I assume I need to replace the tanker sending unit but I don't see how to remove the old unit as it doesn't seem to have a similiar hold down as domestic cars. A link to proper removal instructions would be much appreciated.

You need to make or get a special tool to remove it from the tank and adjust it. The Fuel Sending Unit is a common problem on most benz models. I had mine replaced under warranty. Remove the trunk liner so that you can get at the tank. Remove the FSU with 1/2 tank or less of gas to minimize the mess. Install the new Fuel Sending Unit and fill up the tank. Rotate the FSU until the two holes are properly aligned at 12 and 6 O'Clock or until your gauge reads full.

I assume the long arm with the float goes at the 12:00 o'clock position. How does the fsu come out? Do you depress the two square buttons and rotate? Lefty loosey..... righty tighty? Thanks for your help in this matter.
