For my Nav I went real cheap and used my Pocket PC.
You can see my installation here.

No, COMAND has never been an option on the SLK and it will never be an option in the R170 chassis. It might be available when the '05 SLK (R171 chassis) comes out in 2004, but nothing has been announced, so that's only speculation.
The SLK is now the oldest* model in the M-B lineup and it's the only one without an option for COMAND.
*Excluding the G-class, which is actually a very old chassis even though it's a new model in the USA.

I did a similar thing using a Compaq iPAQ 3950 and Navman GPS.
It uses the Navtech maps which so far have been pretty incredible.
My wife and I have a total of 3 cars
1999 SLK 230

2003 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
http://www.4ezt.com/whoami/Rubicon.html
2003 Mini Cooper S
http://www.4ezt.com/whoami/MiniCooper.html
So instead of shelling out $1600-$2000 per car
I paid $300 for the Navman and $600 for the iPAQ
[which my company actually paid for]
I like the Navman system
http://www.navman.com
because it has a really good antennae system for the iPAQ and is very accurate. The key selling point was the automatic re-route calculation. Navman has both North American and European maps.
