Are you asking whether it's a good investment from the point of a speculator that would buy the car and "flip" it for a profit?
I think it's unlikely considering the market for the entire segment (Boxster, Z4, TT, SLK) is really soft right now.
Additionally, I think it's going to be alot like the Z4 is right now. The Z4 is better in every way than the Z3, except that the styling is somewhat contraversial. The Z4 isn't selling well.
The R171 should also be better than the R170 in every way except that from the "spy" pics we've seen and opinions about them, the styling is still controversial.
Anyway, my experience in the past with buying both my SLKs is that the deposits were fully refundable even if the car arrived at the dealership and I refused delivery. If your dealership has the same policy, you have nothing to lose. You'll see official pictures before you can even spec the options, and you can gauge the demand from dealer waiting lists, etc.
