SLK/R170: Very odd fuel consumption

Very odd fuel consumption
Any ideas on this issue?
My SLK 320 2001 usually does around 85 miles for 20 ltrs of fuel. BUT - the other day I put in 40 ltrs of fuel and it conked out at 116 miles! So I filled up again with 20 ltrs and it did 85 miles again.
I then tried a full tank - but again it ran out of fuel at around 120 miles. Could I have a leak in the tank that loses fuel when I put in more than 20+ ltrs?
This is driving me mad! Thanks in advance for any advice...
