SLK Vario top issues -How to open manually
My 2000 SLK 230 roof will not open. The trunk opens but the top never moves. I'll like to manually open the top enough to be able to remove the roof liner and see if those 2 micro switches are stuck - any idea on how to do this manually? A hex-socket wrench could not release the lock/latch mechanism on the headliner (access hole near the rear view mirror), it is stuck in close position! Any way to de-pressurize or force it to release?
Thanks for any help folks.

I've had to close mine manually (turned out there was a problem in the wiring harness).
There are quite clear instructions starting on page 221 in the car's owners manual, which you can find online at http://www.pdftop.com/ebook/slk+230+owners+manual/
Superficially the instructions involved
- Turning the hex socket you're talking about (there is a hex key attached to the right hand cover panel in the trunk)
- Opening both the left and right hand covers inside the trunk
- Pulling on two wire handles inside those trunk covers (to unlock the mechanism)
- Being extremely careful where you put your hands - those hinges are dangerous
It's really a two person job - and I strongly recommend getting someone to help you.
