SLK/R170: alarm horn not working....'98 SLK230

alarm horn not working....'98 SLK230
the remote control locks and unlocks the car just fine, but the alarm horn doesn't go off. Is this a common problem or did the previous owner somehow disconnected the horn???

What confuses me is that the horn on the steering wheel works fine. I also made the alarm go off and it started hooking. But when I try to lock or unlock it, it doesn't honk. I just want the peace of mind knowing that I locked the car by hearing the honk than constantly looking to see if the hazard lights blinked.

In the US the horn does not honk when you arm the alarm, but you can go to a dealer to have that enabled.
Also the alarm horn and the alarm horn are different.
