SLK/R170: 98 slk power top

98 slk power top
when i try to raise my power top it gets to a certain point about 12" from closing and stops. i can hear the motor running but it freezes up. The power top button light does not flash at all. At that point, i can put the top back down and everything functions properly. any ideas or things i can check?
