leather hinge cover repair

My slk230 has leather "flaps" that cover the roof hinges. They fall off the mounting bracket under the plastic cover that surrounds the roll bars where the 3/4 inch elastic attaches. I have reinstalled them, but they always fall off. I see a 1/4 inch elastic under the leather strap but I don't know what it is supposed to do. I guess this strap is what holds the leather flap in place. Can anyone offer advice or pic's on how this flap should be installed?

I now know the answer to my question. The 1/4 inch elastic does not attach to anything. It supplies tension when the flap folds to prevent the end loop from becoming slack and falling off the bracket. If this info helps anyone else with this same problem, your welcome.
