Snows for SLK

Was wondering what you would recommend for snow tires for SLK. I am not planning to drive my SLK this winter but want to have a good set if I do have to.

Anyone have any experience driving in winter in Ontario? Specifically GTA?

Thanks,

Choose tires no more than 205 mm wide and if you are allowed then buy tires with studs ! We are allowed to use them over here in sweden and it's really what you want on ice !!

What model SLK do you have?

For an SLK230 or SLK320, the recommended setup is 205/55R16 on 7x16ET36 wheels for all 4 corners.

For an SLK32 AMG, the recommended setup is 225/45R17 on 7.5x17ET37 wheels on all for corners.

Bridgestone Blizzak and Michelin Alpin are good brands for snows.

If it's really for occasional use and you don't need maximum performance (i.e. track use) in the summer, consider the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S or similar tire.

That's my setup, using Michellin Alpin's for the winter. I live in Calgary, lots of snow here every year, and I've yet to be stuck.

Thanks to all. These are great recommendations.

I have a SLK320 and I went to three different dealers here in Toronto and they told me all different things. One guy even said that the SLK can't be driven in winter! I asked him what they do in Germany then? He had no response. Makes me laugh that these guys are supposed to be experts!

Rage, good to know that it can be driven in Calgary weather. Spent quite a bit of time on business there and got stuck many a time going up to the north end of the city!

Thanks

I live in the extreme northwest of the city (Arbour Lake) where we get huge snowdrifts from the heavy winds, SLK putts along fine with the Michellin Alpins. My neighbor's M roadster isn't as lucky... All seasons and stuck on the hill for a week before we got a chinook to melt the snow .

It's all about the tires!

Dunlop Winter M2

Anyone here use the Dunlop winter M2 tires? Looking to setup my original 16" wheels with snow treads and get a set of 17" AMG wheels for Summer fun.

I've tried the Dunlop winters on my old SLK 230, I wasn't too pleased with them. I've also tried Goodyear winters on the 230, again, not too great. I've used Pirelli Wintersports on my 320, and was fairly happy with them, until I upgraded to the Michellin Alpins, which were the best. I'm using Alpins on my 32 and my 944 turbo for winters.

Oddly, I haven't tried Blizzaks (pricey)... they're supposed to be the best.

My vote goes for Michelin Alpines too - i have them on my other car (FWD) - works great. No problem pulling out of the garage without shoveling driveway after big snow storm.

I ran Dulop Winter Sport tires last year and will again this year. They compare favorably with the Blizzak and Yokohama tires on my other vehicles.

it is ok , but i m not going to use it on my slk230 this winter , i will choose another brand

Bridgestone Blizzaks LM-22
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Blizzak+LM-22

i almost picked this one last yr for my clk , but price was a problem for me ..... well , maybe I will choose this for my slk this yr

Bridgestone Winter Dueler DM-Z2
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....r+Dueler+DM-Z2

seems this one is very good , but i think it would be very expensive

Michelin Arctic-Alpin (Winter)
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

we can see the survey reult to compare those tires

It was at the downtown location. The guy had no idea what he was talking about. Same guy that told me Mercedes did not make a baby seat that fit in the SLK. Which is not true after I visitied another dealer. I won't say which dealer, but it is the only one downtown, will not be going back there!

How are things in Steeltown?

Just jumped in here late on this, but I replace my 17" Michelin Sport tires in the winter to a set of 16" wheels and Bridgestone Blizzak's (LM-22). I've only used them for 1 season now, but they performed really well.

just my .02
