SLK Special Edition???

This does not make any sense to me. MB adds some extra options to the existing SLK and they re-packaged it as a special edition?

SLK MY04 Special Edition Details
- 7-Twin Spoke Aluminum Alloy Wheels
- Tires: Front 225/45 ZR17 Rear: 245/40 ZR17
- Special Edition Chrome Fender Badges
- Color-Keyed AMG-Design Rear Spoiler
- Sport Seats w/Charcoal Nappa Leather Upholstery
- Calyptus Wood Trim on Door, Dash and Console
- Silver-Color Instruments w/Amber Backlighting
- Trunk-Mounted 6 Disc CD Changer

Why would someone purchase this when the MY04 SLK is set to launch soon?

No clue why someone would?

But I saw one of these the other day at the Home Depot of all places and my buddy went nuts over it. I love the wheels on it, I may try to get a set form the dealer. Whats the asking price for the special edition? I bet its a special edition price!

The whole point is to get people to buy the 2004 SLK Special Edition before the '05 SLK launches. They want to make you think you're getting a bunch of extra equipment at a discounted price so you'll buy it now instead of waiting for the new model.

They did the same thing with the 2000 SLK230 Special Edition that included a some stuff for free (wheels, CD changer, phone) before the facelifed SLK230 and SLK320 arrived. It worked.

This time I'm not so sure. They're charging $1600 for the SE package that is supposed to add value but it's probably worth less than that. I figure $400 for the CD changer, $400 for the spoiler, $400 for the wheels and tires (in lieu of the stock wheels/tires). The seats may be worth a couple hundred if they're actually better than the regular SLK seats. The rest is fluff with no real value.

I think MBUSA is nuts. SLK sales are at an all-time low. The SE package should have been a no-cost option if they wanted to boost sales.

BTW, the price is $41,920 for the SLK230 SE and $47,370 for the SLK320 SE.

2004 SLK Special Edition
I just ordered an 2004 Final Edition SLK a couple of weeks ago and paid closer to 43k after TTL. The reason I bought one is because I don't like the new SLK's looks, I'm not a fan of the 1.8 engine, and I think MB quality in the late 90's is better than some of the most recent MB cars. I traded in a 2002 C-coupe that had lots of problems so the dealership made me a really good deal and I'm so glad I got rid of it because I had to take it in 10 times in the one year I owned it. I don't want to own the first year of any car ever again. I felt like guinea pig with my car. Chipping paint, ESP failure, engine stalling while driving, rear shock failure at 1000 miles, needed new swaybar bushings, cracked steering wheel buttons, and some other junk that "could not be duplicated" so it was never fixed. I think the Nappa leather is a nice touch, and if you had to buy the wheels seperatly it would cost quite a bit. The other details are minor but I think it's a good deal in the long run.
