SLK/R170: missing 5th gear

missing 5th gear
Hi everyone. I have a slk 230 auto and does not go into 5th gear.I am sure when I bought it it hsd 5 gears. The hand book says it has 5 gears and the search on the Internet. No problem with any gears and the box is very smooth. Am I being a numpty or does it have a 5 speed box. Many thanks

Garry, I recently sold my 1998 slk230 and it definitely has 5 speeds, that said, how are you "counting" the gears your car has? The reason I ask is that depending if you have your transmission selecter in W or S mode the transmission may be starting always in second gear. Thus if you are counting gear shifts and not feeling a fifth kick in the first thing I would try is changing the shift mode by pressing the button near the shifter- I believe it is marked W or S.

Hi thanks for your reply. I am sure when I got it it had 5 gears. I have tried it in s mode and w mode. In w mode I count 3 gears and s mode 4 gears. I had a post saying its got 5 gears including reverse. I dont no when the 5th gear went and why it sould. Its smooth through all gears just doesn't go in to fifth or attempt to. Did you ever have any problems with gears
