I've just bought a 2000 SLK 230K. I'd like to change the oil filter myself but it appears to be obscured by a cover. Is this just a cosmetic thing and, more importantly, how do I get it off to access the oil filter?

It's just cosmetic. There are three spring clips underneath that clip on/around rubber nubs. If you just pull up on the front the first two (front and middle side) pop right off. Back one usually takes a light tug of the cover towards you.
