Looking at a 1999 SLK 230
Hi guys, my friend is looking at this car. Its a 1999 with 56k on it. Looks like the interior needs a little touch up. They are asking $4,900. I was just in need of some advice. Is the car reliable? Any major issues with this model? Anything to look out for? Thanks guys

Also, AutoCheck came back clean.
Two owner car. The 1st owner brought it in 12/11/1998 and drove it for like 9,000 miles. 2nd owner picks it up in 02/07/2001 with 9,109 miles and had it since.

Probably as reliable as any 14 year old car. 56k is very good, since most of the issues that you are going to have will not be mileage related but age related. It would appear that the 2nd owner kept it a long time, so it has not been too bad. Check the top cylinders to see if there are any leaks, check top hydraulic pump fluid level, if the top cylinders have not been replaced they are going to fail soon. This can be inexpensive (relatively) depending on whether you do it or have it done (an M-B would charge you about as much as you are paying for the car, so don't go there). Check to see that everything works (locks, top operation, etc.,etc.). Look for any signs of water leaks on sides of trunk(drains get blocked) look under carpet. Look for any paint/rust issues at front of A pillars, and rear of C pillars. Fixing up interior panels is no big deal, there a lot of advice on forums about repainting. Besides, the cars are so great that a little grief is worth it.

MBWorld Fanatic!
Blutec said it well, looks like a good deal with that mileage...i have a 99 with 126k miles...no major issues and a fun car for the money.. Interior issues are well documented...
