Smile Help With Top on SLK 230

hi, i'm new to this forum but i've already learned much from you guys. thanks for all the smart tips, etc... i've recently purchased a 1999 SLK 230 with very low miles from a private party. everything works perfectly.... except the retractable top. i knew about this issue but got a very good price. after reading many of the threads here, it seems that it might be one of the switches. i'm not very mechanical and don't want to risk making things worse. can anyone here recommend someone reasonable and honest in the Los Angeles area that can look at it for me? thank you in advance.

Several things to check. Remove the access panel behind the CD changer in the trunk and check the fluid level on the hydraulic unit for the top. If it is low, there are many threads on this site detailing how to fill or top it off.

Is the valance in the trunk in place for the roof operation? If it is retracted and not in the extended position the top will not work and the control button for the top will blink when you try to lower the top.

thanks for responding. the level is good and the valance is pulled out, that much i already knew. once in a while it does function perfectly. once, it opened and closed four or five times in a row flawlessly without any interruption. i thought the problem had fixed itself (car just sat for many month prior to me buying it), but then it failed again.

when i press and hold the button, the windows all go down and the trunk fully opens up, but the top refuses to disengage and store itself. i tried lubing as much as i could, i have a feeling it might be related to some kind of relay problem.

thanks for any help, it's much appreciated.

Just had same issue and latches were stuck. Gave the headliner where latches are a few good punches and it started to work.
