8.5x17 wheel on front w/ 245's possible?

Has anyone ever tried to put the rear 17 x 8.5 ET 30 wheels on the front of their SLK with 245/40 17's? Will it rub?

I had a blow out and instead of buying new tired for the OEM wheels, decided to pull the trigger on a set of 18's from an R230. Long story short was not happy with the look of the 18's on the front with the wrong sized tires I ordered and left the OEM fronts on with 18's in rear.

After living with it for a week or so, I am not as happy with the look of things and am now looking for alternatives. You can't see in these shots but the rear wheel sits flush with the edge of the fender, the front is recess about an inch and a half inside, I'd like to get the front out closer to where the rear is sitting.

I could try and shoe-horn a 245/35/18 up front; buy new tires for my stock 17" fronts and add spacers, or am now thinking of moving the rear 245/ 40/17 on 17 x 8.5 to the front.

A test fit today yielded the following, but I only have one stock rear with a tire so can not drive the car. It sort of works but cost wise it would probably be a wash between the difference in tires and a pair of spacers. I worry that the SL 18's with a wider tire would introduce other problem, not to mention the manufacturer of my chosen tires doesn't have a 245/35/18 or even a 235/35/18 available.
