SLK/R170: Motor Noise

Slk 230 & CLK500
Motor Noise
Have a 2003 SLK230, 6 speed with 2100 miles. When standing by the drivers door or sitting inside with the motor in idle I hear a steady metallic ticking sound from what it seems under the car. Any idea of what it could be or is it normal.

I've heard the same type of clicking/ticking from my 2001 SLK320, I believe it's some type of minature pump.... it's small and black, and is near the middle of the front fender area on the driver side of the vehicle under the hood.... I have no idea what the nomenclature of the part is though.
