SLK/R170: B-service

B-service
Hello all,
I've searched the archives to no avail, I believe this question had been answered on the precursor to this board. Here goes:
My 98 SLK is coming up on 19k miles and is due for a B-service (the A was a little late). I called for an appointment at Mercedes and they quoted me $595 for the service, which seems high given my incomplete understanding of such maintenance
My question is that I'm guessing that it's not worth trying to take it to an independent mechanic for equivalent service? If I'd save more than $200 then it would probably be worth it, all other things being equal.
thanks in advance,
Aron in San Francisco

If you can get a B-service cheaper at an independent shop, by all means take it there. A B-service isn't a whole lot more than an oil change, dust filter change, and tire rotation.

mbtech208....is right !!! I also find that out after looking at the..................
repair paper and now i stop taking my Slk 230 to the dealer. Changing the air filter and oil are so easy to do. Thanks mbtech208, you were the one who show me how to get to the air filter under the glove box.
