what does your engine sound like?

Hi All,

I am new owner of a 98 SLK230, and new user to this forum.... Got it for a week and loving it I got my car from a lady who had only put 30,000kms on the car since 98, on the books it's been fully serviced by the local merc dealer.

I am noticing that the engine "clicking" sound through out the RPM range from 2000 to 3000rpm, is this normal engine sound of the slk230 engines? Any one have a sound file that can share with me on the sound? I am just concerned that it's abnormal.... However, it does not sound like pinging from low octane fuel... I'll try 94 oct on next fill up instead of 91.

Also noticed some very minor, high pitch vibration at about 2000 rpm, normal?

Many Thanks.

It's really hard to diagnose sounds from just a description, but I do know that the 230K motor is noisy. The sound on startup is often likened to a tractor.

My guess is the sound you're hearing is the supercharger clutch. It engages around 2500rpm normally, but it also engages at startup and on full-throttle acceleration.
