redline

I was racing a pontiac gt and I was already moving at the start so I put gear in third, (automatic) I got excited and redlined it bad.. and I heard a chug chug, when I let off and changed gear, it seemed ok. should I be worried??? When I use the gears is that bad for the car?? they say in manual these are for driving up hills.. but dang, it is fun to use those gears in normal conditions! any advice??

it should have automatically upshifted for your when you hit redline to prevent damage to the transmission and engine...I guess once is OK, but don't do it often.

Keep an eye on the RPM gauge next time

I assume this is an automatic transmission. The automatic transmisison is supposed to upshift before the engine hits redline but sometimes doesn't, then the rev limiter kicks in. The chug-chug was caused by the rev-limiter doing it's job. It cuts off the engine's fuel supply until the RPMs drop back to a couple hundred revs below redline.

Bottom line, there's very little chance that you did any damage.

I hate this

You are right. SLK has auto shift function when it hit redline. But I really hate this function. When I tried to race with other cars, it always shift one gear up right before I did. So when I noticed that, my gear was already in 3rd. This is terrible because this auto shift thing kills my drive fun.
