SLK/R170: ESP Control Unit

ESP Control Unit
Hello all! I am hoping someone has had this issue and can provide some insight/advice. Here's the deal -
My lightbulb indicator came on, along with the ABS/ESP light. Thinking it needed a new brake light (I replaced one just 4 months ago), I took it in. Found out that none of the brake lights were working and needed to replace the brake switch. Had that done and still no brake lights, now I am being told that the ESP control unit needs to be replaced, at $2000 cost. I have a 2004 SLK230, so I really don't want to put that money into this car (only 100K miles).
Has anyone else had this issue and found a different fix?
