The MAS is the Mass Airflow Sensor which is located between the intercooler and throttle body. It measures the air flow based upon the rate of cooling of a 'hot wire'. The MAS also helps to smooth out the aire flow and reduce turbulence. This results in a more accurate measurement of air flow.

What's the benefit of moving the MAS sensor? I saw the post on how to do it, but what are the expected gains? HP?

On the pre-2000 230 Kompressor engines the MAS is location just after exiting the intercooler. The location was later changed to move it closer to the throttle body. It was found that there was a significant amount of turbulence when the MAS was in it's pre-2000 location. This resulted in a flat spot when the S/C clutch kicked in. Moving the MAS got rid of this problem. That's why the Kleeman kit requries moving the MAS on pre-2000 Kompressor engines.

Well, this is only partly correct. Pulley kits tend to reveal "flat spots" in 2000+ models @3000 rpm and sometimes @4000 rpm, too. Thus, the MAS position in the newer models isn't ideal either. I actually went the opposite direction, reloacting the MAS CLOSER to the IC, and the problem virtually disappeared, even with a post-market crankshaft pulley that doubles peak boost pressure.
BTW trying to re-configure the ECU map e.g., by increasing fuel amount doesn't help much.
