SLK/R170: ESP light with engine misfire

ESP light with engine misfire
2001 320
The ESP light (the yellow triangle in the centre) is flashing intermittently and strangely is accompanied by a quite serious engine stutter or misfire.
I can understand that there could be several reasons for the ESP malfunction but am baffled as to why the engine should falter at the same time.
To clarify, the misfire is only when the warning light is on. The engine management light does not come on.
Any thoughts please?

You should read the stored codes and post them ...
