SLK/R170: R170 Keyfobs
R170 Keyfobs
I'm going nuts trying to find replacement remotes for my 2001 SLK. I've tried various models from Ebay and Amazon, but not seem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to a source? My key is fine -- it's the case that's in crappy shape.
Thanks,
Lowell

Ebay and amazon have the cases. You'd have to transfer the parts (key, circuit board and transponder chip) to the new case if you're DIY'ing. It's somewhat simple, but I'd pull a video from YT or something if you're attempting it. The process is similar to VW's fobs.
There's a pin that holds the key in that must be removed, then the rest of the case is disassembled. Take the key and pin and put them on the new fob. There should also be a chip (looked like an old magnet in my VW key, but since I haven't disassembled this one I'm not certain what it'll look like) since I believe these cars have a transponder key.
Additionally if you're US based, the key machine at Walmart will put you in touch with someone who can get a whole new key and fob at probably not a DIY-friendly price, but most likely better than the "best answer" to your question which is "go to a dealer" (lol, no).
Keep in mind if you mess up the transponder chip during the operation you'll be SOL.

I’ve had the same issue with some (but not all) of the ebay cases. If you glue it you won’t be able to change the battery in the future. There are some ebay “fob cover” that fit OVER the case which will hold it together. good luck.
