How Do You Remove The Boot Covering The Manual Shift?

I'd like to clean the area covered by the square plastic and leather piece (the boot) fitted over the manual shift on my SLK. How is it done, and is it simply "popped in" after I'm through? Thanks!

From "Another SLK Forum"...

I learned that you can simply use a plastic wedge and pry it off! Putting cloth on the end of a screwdriver and prying was another option. Being that I couldn't find a plastic wedge at the hardware store here in Italy, I opted for that technique. I'm happy to report that it worked.
