Paint flaking on Console
I have a 98 SLK230, I have noticed that the center console and up around the glove compartment and ignition switch is starting to flake. It appears that the console is painted, is this something anyone else has seen?
I hate to have to remove the console, have it bead sanded and repainted, but I don't think anything short of this is going to work.
Do you think MB would help me out, I doubt it myself.
Thanks,
Mike

If you have a two-tone interior, it's really common for the coating on the center console and the door pulls to peel or chip off and expose the black plastic underneath.
It happens with the solid charcoal interior as well, but it's usually difficult to see because it's black coating over black plastic.
Mercedes has replaced them under warranty for some people, but I assume your car is now out of warranty, plus the new parts will chip and peel in time the same as the parts they replace.
A complete re-coat with a finish that it more durable would definitely be the best thing to do, but I don't know anybody that's done it.
You might want to ask over at MBnz.org
